Avionics & Control Systems Engineer

This role is part of the Blue Origin Engines business unit, where our focus is the design, development, manufacturing, and testing of engines and propulsion systems. Built for multiple uses, our family of engines is powering the next generation of rockets for commercial, civil, national security, and human spaceflight.

As a member of the Avionics & Control Systems organization, you will be responsible for performing integration and test of avionics hardware, software, instrumentation, and harnessing onto test facilities and rocket engines both remotely and in-person. In addition, expect to support systems engineering efforts (requirements and architecture generation and review, test case development, and verification support). This role will also spend some time developing project execution planning within IMS-supporting tools (such as Jira/ITS, SmartSheets, and more).

The successful candidate is a recognized problem solver, eager to autonomously investigate and resolve a wide range of technical challenges that may present when assembling and testing complex electronics systems. You have expertise in at least one of: electrical engineering, software engineering, and systems integration and a good understanding of tangential disciplines (control theory, mechanical engineering, instrumentation, etc.). You have an innate ability to identify anomalous behavior, rapidly determine root cause, and implement corrective action independently or in close collaboration with partners. Your understanding of networking and scripting languages enable you to remotely triage systems-under-test across the country.

There is no "standard day" for this role. We support four rocket engines in varying stages of development. We use test facilities ranging from fully virtual hardware emulations to engines and vehicles themselves. Every day and every test campaign presents exciting new challenges to be overcome. You may be called upon to resolve an IP conflict, automate a software build pipeline, plot and infer conclusions from pressure sensor readings in an engine combustion chamber, break apart an avionics system to inspect for damage, design an analog data acquisition system, or rapidly develop a test procedure to validate a new capability, and that's all before lunch! Position requires up to 25% travel to rocket engine test sites.

Responsibilities include:

• Integrate and test avionics hardware, software, instrumentation, and harnessing onto test facilities and rocket engines
• Identify anomalous behavior, rapidly determine root cause, and implement corrective action interpedently or in close collaboration with stakeholders
• Implement scripts and systems to automate the build, deployment, and verification of engine control software
• Validate and verify that engine control systems are meeting customer expectations and requirements
• Triage remotely networked systems
• Develop requirements and architecture, review generated artifacts for hardware and software development, and help generate verification and validation plans and procedures
• Project engineering activities such as project planning and status tracking across the multiple technologies of the Engine Control System (controller hardware, harnessing, instrumentation, software).

Minimum Qualifications:

• B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Engineering/Science, or similar.
• 5+ years performing some or all of the following: systems engineering, electronics integration, system validation and verification, networking, scripting, test equipment design
• Demonstrated project engineering experience such as planning, status tracking and resource allocation
• Demonstrated proficiency in Python (or similar)
• Demonstrated success building trusting and effective working relationships that improve team performance, deliver results, and strengthen our culture of inclusivity
• Strong organizational, analytical skills, and digital skills
• Demonstrated track record of resourcefulness and success from previous assignments and working with interdisciplinary and multi-functional teams.
• Passion for hands on problem solving and Avionics integration
• Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum

Preferred Qualifications:

• Microsoft Project, Jira, SmartSheets or similar platform experience
• Experience across multiple portions of the product life cycle (Development-Sustainment)
• Experience in technical execution for complex electronics systems
• Demonstrated proficiency in Rust programming language and Linux environments
