About the Role

At sea, an AET Offshore Chief Engineer or just "Chief" is responsible for all operations and maintenance that has to do with any and all engineering equipment throughout the entire vessel. The Chief Engineer also determines the fuel, lube oil, and other consumables required for a voyage, required inventory for spare parts, oversees fuel, lube, and slop oil transfers, prepares the engine room for inspection by local marine/safety authorities, [i.e. U.S. Coast Guard], oversees all major maintenance, is required to be in the engine room during maneuvering operations, and is in charge of the engine room during emergency situations. This is the short list of a Chief Engineer's duties aboard an AET Offshore vessel. Chief Engineer's on AET Offshore vessels are required to have Licenses issued by the USCG. Sailing as Chief Engineer is an immense undertaking of great responsibility.

Responsibilities

  • Equipment Maintenance. Typical tasks: maintains an adequate supply of fuel, lubricating oil, and water; keeps maintenance records, including a history of component failures, for mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems; identifies, recommends, and plans any modifications in those systems. Proficient with Preventive Maintenance Program.
  • Equipment Repair. Typical tasks: assigns repair work on shipboard equipment such as diesel engines, electrical, pumps, winches, hydraulic systems, refrigeration equipment, and compressors to subordinate engineers; repairs or replaces broken parts using hand tools, precision tools, arc and gas welders.
  • Watch Standing. Typical tasks: stands watch as the roving engineer; assumes responsibility for the operation and maintenance of the engineering plant, including constant checks on pressures and temperatures, fuel consumption, and conditions of operating machinery to ensure economical, safe, and efficient operation; keeps engineering logs and records.
  • Miscellaneous. Typical tasks: directs others in firefighting and maintenance of firefighting equipment; performs first aid; prepares requests for capital outlay items and for parts and materials for repairs of equipment; trains new engineering personnel; schedules watches for engineering department; assigns daily duties to engineering staff; assists Ship's Master in completing performance appraisals and recommending appropriate action.

Qualifications

Qualifications include:

  • Designated Duty Engineer, 4000 HP or higher license issued by the U.S. Coast Guard
  • Two years experience as Chief Engineer of a comparable size vessel or equivalent military service
  • Valid USCG STCW endorsement requirements: III/1 OICEW, III/2, III/3, III/4 RFPEW, III/5 Able Seafarer-Engine, VI/1, VI/2, VI/3 & VI/4.
  • Valid driver’s license, TWIC & USCG STCW Medical Certificate
  • Current passport, or the ability to obtain
  • Meet Coast Guard drug testing requirements
  • Ability to speak, read and write English

Required Skills

  • Ability to continuously stand for long periods of time
  • Ability to bend, squat, climb stairs and ladders, and lift frequently
  • Ability to lift up to 80 pounds or more frequently
  • Ability to work in various sea conditions
  • Ability to work in an offshore environment and in various temperatures indoors and outdoors, in weather conditions of heat, rain, or cold dry environments
