Job Description

The Division of Sidewalk & Inspection Management (SIM) is responsible for maintaining 12,750 miles of sidewalk and more than 185,000 corners throughout the city. The Pedestrian Ramp Program (PRP), a unit within SIM, is committed to providing pedestrian (curb) ramps citywide that meet applicable accessibility laws and guidelines. Pedestrian ramps are a critical component in providing safe and accessible means of travel throughout New York City. They facilitate access on and off streets and sidewalks, especially benefiting aging residents and persons with disabilities. PRP offers an exciting opportunity for an experienced engineer to join a fast-paced, collaborative, innovative team. The role involves leading a team of skilled engineers and project managers to deliver an ambitious pedestrian ramp accessibility program. The selected candidate will lead the Engineering team, working with various stakeholders and city agencies, including the Department of Design and Construction, to mitigate project risks, coordinate during scoping, design, and construction phases, and monitor project progress. Responsibilities also include providing technical input, preparing materials for official meetings, and ensuring project adherence to accessibility standards. The Chief Engineer will oversee a team responsible for developing success metrics, monitoring accessibility efforts citywide, conducting feasibility analyses, developing alternative solutions, and preparing estimates and training materials. The role also involves reviewing and approving technical submissions related to accessibility. The candidate will have significant autonomy to plan and oversee pedestrian ramp projects across all boroughs, utilizing innovative methods to ensure timely delivery. Additional duties include performing other tasks as assigned by senior management. Minimum Qualifications Four (4) years of full-time, satisfactory experience in civil engineering; and A valid New York State Professional Engineer’s License, maintained throughout employment. A master's degree in civil engineering from an accredited institution may substitute for one year of experience. To qualify for higher assignment levels, candidates must have at least one year of recent experience as a major contributor or project leader on a complex project requiring specialized expertise. Preferred Skills ***In order to be considered for this position, candidates must be serving permanently in the Civil Engineer title, or have passed and be reachable on civil service exam #4030 or #0156, with proof required, or be eligible under the 55a program.*** The ideal candidate will have exceptional managerial skills, experience managing street reconstruction projects, and strong project management capabilities. Familiarity with NYC infrastructure projects and the Americans with Disabilities Act is preferred. Excellent communication, computer, and analytical skills are desired.
